Generally, our society deals with menopause from the medical worldview. Included in this view is some hidden sexism, which obviously has destructive effects on women. Doctors assist women in dealing with menopause in regard to problematic hormonal and physical changes. One thing that is rarely discussed is how hot flashes and emotional swings are also related to emotional patterns that surface at this time for healing. During menopause a woman’s life goes through a major alteration that can bring her to a new perspective on life. This includes letting go of old ways of looking at things so a new one can emerge.

Medical thinking tends to regard menopause more as an illness that needs to be treated instead of as a normal life process that has many attendant components. Women can benefit from support and various kinds of empowering assistance as they begin to integrate the many changes that come at this time: changes that affect their physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and relational life. Traditional allopathic medicine links emotional changes solely to physical/hormonal issues, and sometimes—with more enlightened doctors—to various forms of loss: such as: the end of childbearing; fear around loss of desire and attractiveness and feelings of loss of power to have an effect in the world. But now there is new scientific research showing that hormones are affected by thinking and emotional patterns. (Dr. Candace Pert ‘s book, The Molecules of Emotion)

When women come to understand the deeper emotional and spiritual potential for growth available at this time, and they acknowledge their own needs and learn to effectively work with the emotions and the transformative spiritual energy that becomes available, menopause becomes a gateway into a new stage of life: one in which women can live in abundant love, joy and creativity with a feeling of wisdom and productive fulfillment. It is a time of sharing their life’s wisdom in the world.
